Visiting the lepers colony on Moloka'i, the Kalaupapa peninsula, is a life-enriching experience. I don't want to write to much, several sites speak about that (
one,
another)
The way there is either an airplane, or a mule ride or a hike.
So in order to really understand the work at stake, we can read
a report by some journalist,
then in order to visualize the feat, let see
the terrain map.
To be short: the trail has a 1,700 ft. elevation change, is three miles long, and has 26 switchbacks, and it is nice to go down. From a US website, we can read:
This fabulous trip is only for the extremely physically fit visitor over 15 years old. Please make sure you have Doctors clearance before booking this trip. Average hiking time is 1.5 hours down.
I love these american warnings. It was indeed taking 1.5 hours, but taking it easy and making way too much photos. The coming back was more difficult for Lisa (climbing is hard on her). My problem was going down is hard on my knees (snowboarding really hurt it in times...)
If scared by the hike, one can check on the
muleride calendar.
It is really important to book the Damien tour, otherwise, the visit is
USELESS!!!
It can be booked for 40$ directly to:
DAMIEN TOURS
(P. O. Box 1, Kalaupapa, HI 96742, (Central Molokai))
Tel. (808) 567-6171
The driver is a very sweet old man. You can also book from the mule-rider, but they'll charge you an additional 10$.
